When I removed the centre consol with the leather outer gearlever gaiter it was instantly clear that the lower rubber gaiter around the gearstick was capput. It was in several pieces that easily came away …… it must have been a source of transmission noise, fumes and dirt.

The new gaiter is the same as the MGB so easy to get hold of. The tricky bit is getting it on over the knuckle half way down the gear stick. I cut off the spout on an old funnel to stretch the gaiter over the knuckle after greasing it well…… it worked.

Regarding replacement gear lever rubber. During production the factory started fitting the rubber ‘ upside down’ i.e. convoluted part below the transmission tunnel. I achieved this by turning the rubber inside out , lubricating with silicon and fitting in the usual way, then popping it back up. Also filed away a small area of the tunnel to stop chaffing and fouling in 2 nd gear.
