Front Brake Caliper Check

After finding the rear brake cylinders in such poor condition (see my earlier posts) – which I think was due most likely to a long time of not being used whilst in storage. I thought it worth while to check the front brakes are fully OK as each of the front calipers consist of 4 pistons so any one of them could have been seized like the rear ones.

I jacked up the front and removed the wheels to gain access to the calipers. They looked in very good condition no rust and very clean. With a mole grip on to each pad lug and the caliper housing I squeezed the pads open forcing the brake pistons into the caliper housing which went in quite smoothly. Then I forced them back again by applying the footbrake pedal and checked each piston had returned to their original positions – which they did.

Based on the visual appearance of the calipers and the results of my little test I concluded that these calipers are pretty newish …… and good. So wheels back on
