I made up a mixture of cellulose lacquer mixed 50/50 with cellulose thinners and using the thin brush that came with the lacquer touch up bottle I ran a loaded brush slowly along the cracks. The paint was absorbed into the crack and then I could see it filling the area each side of the crack by capillary action turning the whitish stain back into wood colour!

It worked well and I was pleased with the result. It still left a black mark where the actual crack is but the opaquish white staining had gone.
