Having just changed the sump gasket it would need a new oil change. I know people that think you need a “better” oil than the Halfords own brand but as far as I’m concerned if the spec of the oil equals or exceeds the spec set by the manufacturer then Halfords is fine – it far exceeds the minimum spec required.

I bought a new oil filter from MGOC which happens to be the same as used on the MGB. The oil filter is easy to get at and because of its location no spillage – I did have a rag under it must in case.

With the car on ramps it was difficult to know how much oil was in but a full 5 litre can showed well above the minimum level. When I started the engine the oil pressure light went out in a couple of seconds so lowered the car to ground level. I needed to buy another 2 litre can of oil to top up to the full mark on the dipstick – so as the book says it needs about 5.5 litres to fill after an oil filter change.
