Sump Off to expose a clean engine

Well it’s the right colour for a good clean engine to expose the gasketless sump joint which has been leaking like a seive. Apparently the original engines were not fitted with gaskets but sealant instead. This stuff goes hard and eventually leaks …… I guess there’s a good chance the gasket does as well after 30+ years.

I could see that the oil pickup has stopped some of the debris I reckon got in when I replaced the camshaft. I had to take the timing cover off from the front end of the sump to get to the camshaft.  I removed the pickup pipe and cleared the debris and replaced it with a new pickup gasket.

After removing the old sealant and cleaning the surfaces I bought an improved rubber sump gasket which was about 3mm thick also a stiffener plate which was used on earlier engines for the rear of the sump gasket.

You need 2 longer sump screws to fit the stiffener bar ….. 5/16 UNC x 7/8″ – rimmer part no.  603944

All back together and so far no more leaks 🤞
