MG RV8 Rear Speakers Refurb

The speakers at the back sounded very distorted at any slightest loud volume. I initially suspected the speaker amplifier may be faulty but its worth checking the condition of the speakers …… when I took them apart I realised why.  The surround between the cone and the frame had totally disintegrated. If you suspect the same you can check by removing the boot panel to expose the back of the speakers and shine a torch through the speaker slots to inspect.

Before …..

Removing the speakers from the bulkhead is pretty straight forward and the grill comes away after releasing the tabs but the tricky bit is removing the inner cover. There are 4 notches around the rim which need to be carefully prised over. Once removed the disintegrated cone surround can be cleaned up ready for the replacement.

The repair kit

The outer rim of the new surround has to be trimmed about 3mm off the radius to fit. The inner edge of the new surround tucked under the edge of the cone which holds it in place whilst superglue is applied under the edges. When the glue had set I also applied glue from the other side through the slots in the speaker frame. Glue isn’t required on the outer edge of the surround as it is held in place by the cover.

After……..

After refitting the speakers the difference in sound is phenomenal….. I guess to be expected considering the mess they were in!
