MGRV8 Glovebox light switch repair

Finished job with plastic bung filling hole

The glovebox light switch serves 2 functions, one to put the glovebox light on and secondly to push the glovebox door open when you push the release button. For some reason when I got the car the light switch was not there – just a hole! I suspect that at some time in the past someone had the dashboard out and forgot to fit the switch before refixing the dash.

No switch!

I removed the cover under the glovebox and was able to see the switch hanging down beside the glovebox. I spent a good hour trying to get the switch back in the hole which I did but no way could I fix it in position with any screw – the gap just to small to get fingers in.

25mm access hole

Purists might not approve but the only way I could see that I could get it back into position is to cut a 25mm hole through from inside the the glovebox next to the switch.

Switch now back in place.

This did the trick and the switch was screwed back into its proper place. A rubber grommet will fill the hole and alls good – it’s discreet and not really noticeable. The glovebox light now works and I can now easily open the glovebox door to get to the contents.
