Although the woodwork on the dash is pretty well perfect condition the door caps have not faired so well. There are several long cracks along the cappings and along the crank the varnish is coming away from the wood leaving whitish streaks.
I had some good quality polyurethane clear varnish which I poured a little into a seperate small jar and added about 50% thinners. With a small brush I put this thinned varnish along the cracks. The varnish seemed to get sucked into the crack under and between the original coating of varnish and the veneer – displacing the air gap and making the white streak effect disappear!

Later when it had dried the white marks faintly re-appeared so I put more of the thinned varnish along the crack. After 3 applications the white streaks had disappeared. It had still left a dark line along the crack where the veneer was discoloured ….. but in my opinion although far from perfect it was an overall improvement.
To finish the job I then rubbed the whole door cap down with very fine wet and dry and added a top coat of unthinned varnish with a good quality brush.
